3D pens have been gaining popularity lately, but quite a lot of people still have only a vague idea of what they are and what they’re for. In fact, a 3D pen is essentially a miniature 3D printer—or, more precisely, a feed mechanism (extruder) and a hot end (heater).
In a 3D printer, this mechanism moves automatically according to a program. When using a 3D pen, you do everything by hand.
And while a printer is fairly large and even the budget version costs around $134.

A pen, on the other hand, is a little simpler and costs less. The model shown in the photo comes to about $35.

This picture makes it easy to understand what each part does.
Feed the plastic filament in from the back and connect the power supply to the dedicated socket.
When you press the control button, the mechanism starts pushing the plastic through the heater, and a thin strand of plastic comes out of the nozzle.

Here are a few recommended, tried-and-tested 3D pens.
The second-generation Myriwell pen is an affordable, good-quality option, priced at $26.86.
The package includes the pen itself.

Power supply

It also comes with some plastic filament, enough to try the pen out.

You can buy more filament separately: 20 pieces, 5 meters each, cost about $15.

There are more expensive options too, such as the third-generation pen, which costs around $40.
It works with ABS filament and has a 0.4 mm nozzle.

The package includes the pen, a power supply, instructions, and three lengths of filament.

And to give you a clear idea of what you can make with 3D pens like these, here’s a video.
