HJ802540 battery: a quick test with a surprising result

A friend recently asked me to test a small battery for quadcopters and similar toys. I was curious, so that’s how I came up with the topic for today’s review.

I’ve mentioned before that a friend of mine sells various batteries, cells, and other things. He asked me to test this model. At first, I thought of it as a toy battery, but it managed to pleasantly surprise me.
I’ve seen similar batteries in Ukraine (though I’m not sure they were exactly these ones) here, and on AliExpress here.

So, this is a lithium-polymer battery in a soft package, meaning it has virtually no protective casing. It also has no built-in protection, valves, or anything like that. It’s marketed for quadcopters because it can deliver a high current; the claimed rating is around 20C, which works out to 12 A at a capacity of 600 mAh.

It has the model number printed on it and a JST connector, though other options are available for different models.

The actual dimensions are slightly larger than those stated on the label, but I measured the maximum dimensions, including the wrapping, rather than just the size of the cell itself.

The battery’s impedance is 21 mΩ, but there’s a catch: my first reading was 26 mΩ, while the second was better. The quality of the contact with the battery terminals may be a factor.

I used an EBC-A10H battery tester for the test, with a maximum current of 10 A. Just to be safe, I placed the battery on a piece of ceramic tile.

The first charge/discharge cycle yielded about 740 mAh. I was so surprised that I recalibrated the electronic load. There was a small error that caused readings at low currents to be a few percent too high, but surely not by 20%...

In all the tests, the battery was charged at 1C, or 600 mA. Charging took 1 hour and 20 minutes, which is a very good result. I’d also note that the CV phase was relatively short, which is another plus.

I got a bit carried away with the tests and ended up checking the capacity at 10 different discharge currents: 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2,, 4, 6, 8, 10C, 8 and 10 A, although I could really have cut the number of tests roughly in half.

It turned out that the battery not only delivers up to 10 A with ease, but also has a capacity of around 680 mAh at that current—almost 15% more than claimed.

It doesn’t heat up much, either. Below are photos taken at 6, 8, and 10 A. The highest temperature was near the wire leads; at 10 A, the battery warmed up to just 62 degrees.

Yes, I really am surprised. Not only does this little thing deliver up to 10 A—I think that’s far from its limit, and it could probably handle 12–14 A—but its capacity is also 15–20% higher than claimed.

In short, I liked it.

Questions and answers

What capacity did the HJ802540 battery deliver in the test?

At discharge currents up to 10 A, it delivered about 680 mAh, nearly 15% above its rated 600 mAh. The first cycle measured about 740 mAh.

What was the highest tested current for the HJ802540, and how hot did it get?

The battery was tested at currents up to 10 A and reached 62 °C. The author thinks it may handle more, but that was not tested.

What impedance did the HJ802540 battery measure?

The measured impedance was 21 mΩ, although the first measurement was 26 mΩ. The author notes that contact quality at the battery terminals may have affected the reading.
