Panel ammeter-voltmeter and its use.

A while ago, I came up with the idea of building a simple but useful device. I had everything I needed at home except an ammeter-voltmeter, so I ordered one, received it, and got started on the project.
More after the jump.

At the very beginning of the month, I wrote that I planned to devote most of this month's reviews to DIY projects and various things for them. But life had other plans: a few problems came up, and I didn't write anything for over two weeks or visit Muska much.
I also didn't manage to post a review on April 18, even though I had planned to mark the anniversary of my first review here that way.
Over the past year, I've made a lot of new friends and gotten to know a really great, friendly community, so let's say today is April 18 and I'm posting this review to celebrate the anniversary :)

As always, I'll start with how it arrived. And, as always, I'll hide this part behind a spoiler.

The package includes the device itself, its power cable (it is not powered from the circuit being measured), and a cable for connecting the current and voltage measurement circuits.
The connectors hold quite securely, although the wires themselves are rather thin. Unfortunately, that's a problem with all devices like this.
These devices are pretty well known, so I doubt I'll be revealing anything new.

The specifications are printed on the side.
Only the 10 A rating is marked, though; the voltage measurement range isn't. I only noticed after testing that the device is rated for measurements up to 100 V. I tested it only up to 32 V because I thought it was rated for 30 V max. A frustrating oversight.

The device has standard mounting dimensions of 45 × 26 mm. It also has clips to secure it in a panel, but note that you'll have to remove the board from the case to install it, since the clips will press against the displays. Otherwise, fitting the device may be difficult or even impossible.
The inside of the device is visible in the photo. You can clearly see two trimmer resistors for adjusting the voltage and current readings.

For some reason, the display reminded me of the old Soviet-era displays we used to have. I can't remember what they were called, but they had the same blocky segments. The ones we had were much dimmer, though.

The device has its own shunt. There's a component under the shunt that looks like an op-amp, but I can't say for sure since I couldn't find any documentation. If anyone knows what it is, please let me know in the comments. I'd really appreciate it.

This photo clearly shows the controller, which has no markings at all, the power supply regulator IC, the power connector, and a diode that protects against reverse polarity (I tested that by accident).

I'll get straight to the testing instead of beating around the bush.
In my opinion, this is the most important part when describing devices like this (or anything else intended to measure something).

That concludes the testing of the ammeter-voltmeter.
Now I can move on to describing what I ordered this panel meter for.

Summary.
I won't split this into pros and cons, because I think this little meter is quite good. It's not quite perfect, of course, but it does what you'd expect for its class. I was especially pleased that it can be calibrated. I previously reviewed an ammeter that couldn't be fixed even with calibration; this one has no such problem. The display is easy enough to read, though I would have swapped the display colors—but that's a matter of personal preference.

The ammeter-voltmeter was provided for review by the eachbuyer store.

I hope you found the review interesting and useful. I look forward to your questions and suggestions in the comments :)

Questions and answers

What voltage range does the panel ammeter-voltmeter measure?

The device is marked for measurements up to 100 V, but the author tested voltage only up to 32 V.

What electronic load did the author build with this ammeter-voltmeter?

It is a simple op-amp circuit designed for currents up to 5 A and powered at 8 V. Power dissipated by the power transistor should stay within 30–40 W.

Can you calibrate the panel ammeter-voltmeter?

Yes. It has separate trimmers for adjusting current and voltage readings, and the author found that calibration improved the readings.
