Some time ago, I posted a review of a USB-RS232-TTL converter. In the review, I mentioned that the package contained more than just the converter. But I was busy at work and couldn't post a review of the second item in the package right away. I'll make up for that now.

I decided to give my computer a bit of an upgrade. Since I needed two network cards and was short on slots, I needed a network card for a PCI-E slot. I had plenty of time, so I decided to buy one on AliExpress.

Quite a few years ago, I first learned about making circuit boards using the laser-and-iron method. To me, it was like the invention of the wheel. Read the rest of the story after the jump.
Universal remote for air conditioners (almost tactical :)))).
20-07-2014, 15:23
There's an old air conditioner at work. It works, but it doesn't have a remote, and using it without one isn't very convenient. I tried a few remotes from the market, but none of them worked so far. So when I was picking another product to review and test on the Chinabuye website, I decided to give their universal remote a try. Read on after the jump.

Not long ago, a friend brought me his beloved laptop. The cause of the failure was almost banal: it had been spilled on with juice. Coffee would have been even more banal. Read on for the rest of the story.
A pair of UltraFire TR17670 1800mAh 3.7V batteries and a little DIY.

I have an ESR meter built using a circuit designed by GO, a fellow member of the pro-radio forum. I’m sure some of you use this meter too. I use it all the time, but when it runs on a 9V battery with the display backlight on, it drains batteries pretty quickly, so I decided to order a pair of rechargeable batteries for it. Details after the jump.
A simple standalone smoke detector, or a device that could actually save your life.
9-07-2014, 20:27
About 17–18 years ago, I saw a similar detector in the kitchen of one of my clients. While the apartment owner was away, we even tried it out with the builders. But back then they cost a lot of money, so I didn't buy one, and then I somehow forgot about it. A few days ago, a similar (if not identical) detector was sent to me free of charge for review by the chinabuye store. Read on for the description, photos, and details on how to use it.

Some readers may remember my review of a homemade bench power supply. Recently, interface converters arrived to go with it, for connecting it to a computer.

A rotary encoder—just a decent, ordinary rotary encoder.

When I ordered a board for my bench power supply, I decided to get a rotary encoder for it too, since the original one was soldered to the board and I really didn't want to desolder it.
A decent ZXY6005S DC-DC module, or a DIY bench power supply.
22-06-2014, 03:37
I had a small homemade power supply that I used to test and power various little projects. But I built it a long time ago, and it had become outdated both mentally and physically. At first I wanted to buy a ready-made replacement, but “that’s not how we do things,” so I decided to build one myself again.
A small 12 V, 3 A power supply
16-06-2014, 16:44
I spotted this power supply on the ChinaBay website and wanted to take a closer look. Since they ended up providing it to me for free, it would have been sacrilege not to experiment with it. Anyway, more after the jump.
USB thermometer, an ambiguous result

Summer and hot weather arrived unexpectedly once again, and since I’m responsible for a small server room, I wanted a way to monitor the room temperature remotely.

I got so into experimenting with LED lighting and modifying light fixtures that when I was offered a product to test, I couldn't resist and decided to try a factory-made LED driver. If you're interested, read on to see how the idea developed.
Voltmeter with a 0.56-inch display.

In my previous review, I wrote about an ammeter with a display. This time I decided to take a look at a voltmeter bought from the same seller.
An ammeter with a 0.56-inch display—or, more simply, a number-watcher.
8-05-2014, 02:28
I’d been wanting to pick up a small ammeter and voltmeter, in a form factor suitable for mounting in a panel or plastic enclosure. I chose them, ordered, paid, and received them—in other words, nothing unusual so far. Now it’s time to take a closer look at what arrived. First, the ammeter.
