A handy little thing, or let's talk about storage systems
27-04-2016, 02:41
Surely every radio amateur, and not just radio amateurs, gradually accumulates lots of different components, fasteners, and all sorts of other small bits and pieces. And all this stuff has to be stored somewhere, preferably not in one big pile. For this, people use either whatever they have on hand, such as matchboxes assembled into large organizers, or storage boxes bought for the purpose. Today I want to tell you about one such box.
Sunvell T95, a nice TV box based on the Amlogic S905
26-04-2016, 13:52
I’ve already reviewed one of the boxes from the Gearbest sale, but there were two boxes, so today I’m reviewing the second one. In fact, this TV box was ordered first, but due to shipping quirks, it arrived second. We’ll take it apart, test it, and analyze it.
Kit for building a laser engraver with a 2.5-watt laser
22-04-2016, 11:04
I’ve already told you about the kit for building a 3D printer, and today I want to tell you about my saga of building a laser engraver. It didn’t all go as smoothly as I’d hoped, but I did get a positive result in the end. Anyway, if you’re interested in little desktop machines, read on. I hope you’ll find it interesting.
Mini M8S, a decent little TV box with an Amlogic S905
18-04-2016, 12:01
Not long ago, Gearbest had a sale. I spotted a few things that caught my eye, so I decided to pick them up too. While the rest is still on its way, today I'll write about what has already arrived. Inspection, teardown, tests and analysis, as always, in the usual place :)
Netac P500 64GB Micro SD: a brief look at a small memory card
17-04-2016, 08:43
Memory cards are among the most popular products bought from our online stores and from stores in China. They’re used in tablets, media players, phones, camcorders, TV boxes, and so on. So when I was offered the chance to try out a new memory card, I didn’t hesitate much—it was sure to come in handy. So, here’s a brief look at a small memory card.
Cube iwork8 Ultimate, a small Windows tablet with an Atom x5-Z8300
16-04-2016, 11:21
People often comment on tablet reviews that a high screen resolution isn't always a good thing. This time, I decided to find out how comfortable it really is to use a tablet with an 8-inch, 1280 x 800 screen, and simply see what an inexpensive tablet can do. And of course, I'll take it apart, modify it, and test it.
MX4, another TV box based on the familiar RK3229
14-04-2016, 07:11
I recently posted a review of a TV box based on the new RK3229, and today I have a more interesting version of a box with the same processor on my desk. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), it runs the same Android version, 4.4. As usual, we'll take it apart, inspect it, and test it.
MP2359DJ is a pretty good little PWM controller
6-04-2016, 02:35
I came across a mention of this PWM controller on one of the forums. Since I occasionally build various electronic devices, I decided to order one and give it a try. And since I did order it—and even received it (which doesn't always happen these days)—it seemed like a good idea to test it before confirming receipt. Description, testing, and results are all below the fold.
Mini MXQ, TV box with the new RK3229
5-04-2016, 20:09
I know my readers prefer reviews about amateur radio, and that will be the next one, so bear with me a little. :) But today I have a TV box on my desk, combining the new RK3229 processor with the familiar Android version 4.4. As always, a full teardown, tests, and analysis.
Wintel Pro CX-W8, an inexpensive mini PC running Windows 10
27-03-2016, 12:01
I've already reviewed quite a few mini PCs running Windows. But then I came across a relatively inexpensive model and decided to see what mini PCs in the lower price range have to offer. As usual, though, this turned into the whole routine: inspection, tests, teardown, modifications, setup, and more tests.
ZONESTAR P802, aka Prusa i3, or building a 3D printer from a kit
24-03-2016, 11:31
I've already reviewed several kits that let you build all sorts of useful things for radio enthusiasts. But today I'm reviewing a bigger kit. We'll try to build a recent invention: a 3D printer. I can't say it all went smoothly. I kept expecting something to go wrong, but in the end, I managed to put something together. Anyway, a description of what this is and an attempt at a step-by-step guide are below the fold.
Powerful and Unusual Universal Converter Based on the LTC3780
16-03-2016, 13:31
I finally got around to trying out an unusual SEPIC converter (or so I thought at first). It’s unusual, at the very least, because it uses just one inductor, whereas a conventional one always uses two (or a coupled inductor).
Onda M2 Mini PC: Small, but Not Atom-Based
7-03-2016, 08:41
ONDA, a company known for its tablets, apparently decided not to stop at making these devices and set its sights on the small desktop computer market. Today, I’ll tell you about one of these devices. As always, there’ll be a look around, some tests, a teardown, and a few more hurdles to overcome.
Multimeters: so alike, yet so different
5-03-2016, 22:16
I've already published a comparison of two multimeters that differed greatly in both price and capabilities. Today I'm reviewing another pair, with much more similar specifications, but still noticeably different from each other.
DC-DC Step-Down Module Rated for 10 A
5-03-2016, 00:16
Before New Year, readers asked me to review a couple of converters. Well, it wasn't really any trouble, and I was curious myself, so I ordered them, received them, and tested them. I was actually more interested in a slightly different converter, but I still haven't gotten around to it, so I'll cover that one another time. Today, though, I'm reviewing a simple DC-DC converter rated for 10 A.
SANYO UR18650ZY
18-02-2016, 00:41
While the big, important reviews are in the works, I decided to put together a short review/report in the “Look what arrived” series. So, today’s review is a test of SANYO UR18650ZY batteries. If you’re interested, come on in.
MeeGoPad T03 PRO is back, but is it any better?
14-02-2016, 21:53
Quite a few of my readers probably remember my review of one of the smallest computers, the MeeGoPad T02. The review was probably remembered less for its description of the computer than for the difficulties I ran into while modifying it. Although I did manage to get the better of it back then, it wasn't easy. When I saw an updated version of this computer, I couldn't pass it up. I was curious to see whether it really was any better. Anyway, if you're interested, come on in. :)
Multichannel DC-DC Converter
12-02-2016, 03:15
Today I’m reviewing another kit that lets you build a multichannel voltage converter. Some time ago, at readers’ request, I ordered several different voltage converters. I chose the one I’m reviewing today myself, just out of curiosity—I wanted to see what it was, and thought it might come in handy for someone. Photos, schematics, tests—everything as usual :)
