How it is calculated

E = P · t / 1000  (kWh)
Cost = E · rate

Multiply the appliance's power in watts by its operating hours and divide by 1,000 to get the kilowatt-hours shown on your meter. A month is counted as 30 days, a year as 365. The currency is the same as the one used for the rate you enter.

What to look for

  • Refrigerators and heaters with thermostats run in cycles: enter the actual compressor or heating element runtime in the hours field.
  • It's easier to measure actual consumption with a plug-in wattmeter: the power listed on the label is usually the maximum.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an appliance’s energy consumption?

Multiply the power by the time and divide by 1000. A 100 W appliance running around the clock uses 2.4 kWh per day and 72 kWh in 30 days.

How much does it cost to leave a 10 W device on all year?

That’s 87.6 kWh per year. At a rate of 4.32 UAH per kWh, it costs about 378 UAH.

How can I find an appliance’s actual power consumption?

The most reliable way is to measure it with a plug-in wattmeter: the label gives the maximum, while a refrigerator or pump runs in cycles. For appliances like these, calculate the average power over a day.
