USB-to-RS232 TTL converter, a good product for a low price.

Some readers will surely remember my review of the DIY lab power supply. Recently, interface converters arrived to go with it, for connecting it to a computer.

I ordered them quite a bit later than the boards, and they took a long time to arrive, so they showed up when I had almost finished everything.
The little boards were cheap and came in a bundle, but I’ll review the rest of the bundle later (if I can come up with a topic and a use for it). The seller provided a bogus tracking number for some Chinese fake tracking site (though he did warn me about it), but since the parcel was inexpensive, I wasn’t too worried. I just kept an eye on the order’s delivery deadline.
But everything arrived in perfect condition, in a little white envelope, neatly packed in small zip-lock bags.

The bags even had some kind of sticker with a number on them, presumably a part number or something else. It doesn’t really matter, but I gave the seller an excellent rating for the neat packaging.

The interface converter is built around the very common PL2303 chip made by Prolific www.electronicaestudio.com/docs/PL2303.pdf. It’s not my beloved FT232, of course, but it’s perfectly acceptable. I haven’t been able to find genuine FTDI chips at a reasonable price, and these boards cost next to nothing (especially considering that they sell for 2–3 times as much at our local market). Yes, you can find even more “tempting” prices for these boards, but I didn’t need 10–50 of them, so I bought them this way.

There are three LEDs on the board: red for power, blue for transmit, and green for receive.
Either the resistors are the wrong values or something else is going on, but the red LED is so bright it practically makes your eyes pop out, the blue one is dim, and the green one is barely visible. But since these LEDs didn’t matter to me at all, I didn’t bother investigating.
The board also has a 5-pin header, with 3.3 V, 5 V (which, as far as I can tell, comes straight from USB), RX, TX, and ground.
The board uses the simplest possible circuit: the 3.3 V output comes from the PL2303, RX is pulled up to 5 V, and TX outputs a logic-level signal at 5 V.
If you need to bring out the other signals, you’ll have to do some tinkering.
The values of all the installed components are marked on the board, and the assembly is quite neat.

But as I mentioned above, I didn’t get these boards just to admire their colorful LEDs, so I decided to put them to use right away—at least one of them. The other will be for some other project.

I got everything I needed to modify these boards ready and got to work. I’ll point out a few things about the boards as I go.

I decided to use the converter board in my lab power supply, which I reviewed recently. By the way, this little board (the galvanic isolation board) is included in the overall PCB layout with the front panel.

Summary.
Pros.
The boards work perfectly; no defects found.
The seller shipped everything promptly and on time.
Everything arrived in excellent condition.
The boards cost me less than they would have locally.

Cons.
The LEDs have different brightness levels, but that didn't matter to me.
The connector's mounting tabs aren't soldered, but that actually helped me.

I hope this review helps anyone looking for similar boards save a little money.
Comments, corrections, and suggestions are welcome.

P.S. While I was writing this review, the seller started charging for shipping to Ukraine. I praised them too soon :((
Shipping to Russia is still free.
