The 2004 display, or when the 1602 is no longer enough.

As mentioned above, I wanted to make a new version of the component tester, so I ordered a display from Chinabay. While it was making its way to me (it took two weeks, by the way), I leisurely laid out a small board for it (and to test it, too).
The display arrived not in a cardboard box, which would have been safer, but it was still packed pretty well.
I pulled something soft out of the familiar envelope that everyone knows.
The packaging was a set of nesting dolls: an antistatic bag + a zip-lock bag + a bubble-wrap bag + a bubble-wrap envelope.
After stripping off all the packaging, I finally unearthed the display itself. It's quite heavy, by the way, with fairly thick metal around the screen. The screen also has a protective film on it.
There's nothing particularly interesting on the back, apart from a small label with the part number. It looks like it had been sitting in a warehouse for quite a while, since the label had faded and I could barely make out the display model.
The label read PC2004LRS-AWA-B. I easily found the datasheet on Google.
There were also the numbers 9939 on the back, but I doubt the display was made in the 39th week of 1999.
A special big thank-you to one of my readers, who decided to help with this review and sent me two similar displays as a gift. They're made by Winstar and have no backlight, but they do have Cyrillic characters. These displays will also make a brief appearance in the review.
The displays look quite different from the back. By the way, both have contacts along the top edge, which means they need to be mounted on the board with the contacts facing up. Some displays are mounted with the contacts facing down.
So, here's the little display family all together.
I mentioned above that the display under review has a backlight. It's a separate backlight module installed beneath the display glass. The module itself is quite thick.
A comparison of the display without a backlight and with one.
Since the backlight uses a fairly old technology, its performance is very poor.
You could even say that the backlight spoils the whole impression of this display.
On the one hand, it's very uniform, which is good. In newer displays, the LEDs are mounted along the edge of the backlight panel, so you can clearly see the light spilling in from the sides. But this old-style backlight is very dim.
I did a quick comparison.
At the top is a display with a different type of backlight, drawing 20 mA, with 4 V across the LEDs.
At the bottom is the display under review, with the same voltage across the LEDs, drawing 100 mA, 260 mA (according to the datasheet), and 300 mA (a slight overclock).
As you can see in the photos, the backlight isn't very bright, and you can also see the side glow typical of the backlights used in most modern Chinese displays. In real life, I liked the modern version better, but that's really a matter of personal preference.
Since the rest of the review wouldn't be possible without using the hardware, I'll move on to how this display is used.
Summary.
Pros
The display works properly.
Well and neatly assembled.
The packaging and delivery speed (about two weeks) were perfectly satisfactory. (For comparison, two other indicators were shipped to me from Moscow and took 2 days longer.)
Cons
The backlight is very dim, yet draws a lot of current. (The backlight accounts for about 90% of the device's power consumption.)
No Cyrillic support (when will China start making displays that support Cyrillic? It would increase the number of buyers). It doesn't matter to me, but it may be a deal-breaker for some.
This display was provided to me free of charge for testing and review by the chinabuye store, but the price is quite reasonable, too. Similar displays here cost at least one and a half times as much.
I hope you find my review useful. Comments, suggestions, and advice are welcome.
