How a Power Supply Works, Part 5
206 455155
24-06-2017, 01:49
Today's article is about the output rectifier, filter, and feedback circuit in switching power supplies. This is the final article in the general introductory series. After this, I plan to answer questions that came up while publishing the previous parts, and then take a closer look at some individual sections.
KingDian N480 - 240GB SSD M.2 and adapter
22-06-2017, 23:21
I had two reasons for ordering this SSD and adapter: to test whether modern computers are working properly, and to use it as an extra drive for my main computer the rest of the time. There isn't much to say about it, so this review will be very short.

How a Power Supply Works, Part 4

97 17480
16-06-2017, 14:40
Today we'll look at the next stage after the inverter: the power transformer. This won't be a very long article, but I think it'll be useful.
12.6 V 3 A Charger, or Continuing the Discussion About Converting a Cordless Drill Battery
16-06-2017, 14:19
At the end of last year, I published a couple of reviews about converting cordless drill batteries. Today, I’ll tell you about an alternative way to charge a converted battery using a ready-made charger. As usual, we’ll take a look, take it apart, and go through the schematics and tests.
A compact four-port USB 3.0 hub from Ugreen
13-06-2017, 23:00
A couple of years ago, I published a review of a compact USB hub. It works fine, and I have no complaints about it, but after using it for a while, I found it wasn't very convenient for me. This time, I picked a USB hub from a different manufacturer to review. It has a slightly different port layout, but I also found out along the way that it's an updated version of hubs from this manufacturer that I reviewed earlier.
3D Pens: A Creative Tool
12-06-2017, 00:33
3D pens have been gaining popularity lately, but quite a lot of people still have only a vague idea of what they are and what they’re for.
MECOOL M8S PRO, a very small TV box or DDR3 vs DDR4
10-06-2017, 10:52
Not so long ago, you could still call the Amlogic S912 SoC brand-new. But time flies, and it has become so common that a review of an S912-based TV box is no longer anything special. So I’ll try not to drag this out too much.

What a switching power supply consists of, part 3

158 03361
9-06-2017, 11:09
Last time, I covered the input stage of a switching power supply, the bridge rectifier, and the filter capacitors. Now it’s time for the next stage: the inverter. This is the most complex and extensive part, but also the most useful.
Expro x1 by IRULU, a small, modest tablet
6-06-2017, 16:34
Not long ago, I was asked to write a little review of an IRULU product. I decided to give it a try out of curiosity. A quick heads-up: this is a very basic tablet, but I’ll test it just like all the others. And of course, there’ll be a teardown.
VOYO VBOOK V2, a netbook with an 11.6-inch screen and an N3450 processor
5-06-2017, 13:21
At the very beginning of the year, I posted a review of a Voyo mini PC based on the new N4200 Apollo Lake processor. I was quite impressed with its specs, but I also mentioned that there was a lower-end version of this processor. Today, I'm reviewing a netbook built around it. As usual, we'll take a look around, take it apart, run some tests, and compare the N4200 with the N3450—or Pentium with Celeron—along the way.
Vernee Thor E smartphone, the Thor lineup continues
4-06-2017, 13:04
Almost exactly a year ago, I published a review of the debut model from a manufacturer that was still unknown at the time, Vernee. You can say a lot and criticize its shortcomings, but in any case, the Thor model they released first turned out not to be so bad after all, and one of these “firstborns” has been under my watch for more than a year now. So today I’ll tell you about the next phone in the Thor lineup, show it, and compare it with the previous model, sometimes “face to face.” And, of course, there’ll be the obligatory teardown.

What a Switching Power Supply Is Made Of, Part 2
121 04223
31-05-2017, 02:49
I’ve already posted videos about individual parts of a power supply, but after thinking it over, I decided I hadn’t done it the right way—or, more precisely, not in a very logical order—so I’m putting that right. With this article, I’m starting a short series called "How It Works", where I’ll go through all the sections of a typical switching power supply one by one, explain what they do, and point out where components can fail.
A decent kit for stripping and terminating wires
25-05-2017, 14:05
I use various terminals quite often, although I usually solder the wires to them. But I was offered a more convenient tool for the job. In fact, it was a whole kit for working with wires and terminals, so I decided to try it and see whether it really is more convenient.
Inexpensive 1080p IP Camera from OWSOO
23-05-2017, 20:51
Somehow, my reviews of AHD cameras have completely distracted me from the more common IP cameras. I’ll try to make up for that with this review. This time, when choosing a product to review, I also tried to find the best possible value for money. Read on to see how that turned out.
DXL360S, dual-axis digital inclinometer
18-05-2017, 15:11
I happened to come across a small, but presumably interesting, item and thought it would be worth taking a closer look. It’s not a very common tool—I’d even call it niche—but it can be quite useful in some situations.

Q&A, attempt one

17-05-2017, 21:29
I decided to answer a couple of questions people asked me in the comments on a video. This might be useful to other readers too.
Another power supply, this time 12 V, 50 A, or 600 W
12-05-2017, 21:17
I planned to review this back in early April, but I kept putting it off. Finally, I got around to testing this power supply. As I mentioned last time, I ordered this power supply at the request of some readers who were interested in a review of a high-power PSU, mainly for use with 3D printers. I ordered it, inspected it, tested it, and now it’s time to tell you about it.
A pair of 1080P AHD cameras from KKmoon
9-05-2017, 10:56
I decided to review these cameras not so much because of the cameras themselves, but because of their manufacturer. About a year ago, I came across Kkmoon when I bought a thermal imager, so I decided to see what they had to offer for video surveillance. In any case, the review will follow my usual format: inspection, teardown, and tests.
