CSB HRL-1234W-F2-FR Battery or Thoughts on Replacing Them with LiFePO4
I recently published two reviews of 32700-size LiFePO4 batteries. At the time, I wrote that I’d like to use them as replacements for conventional lead-acid batteries. Then, quite by chance, I got my hands on a brand-new CSB HRL-1234W battery, the kind used in UPS units, and I wanted to see “what’s what.”
XH-M403 Adjustable Voltage Converter
19-03-2020, 00:42
Today I'm reviewing a somewhat unusual device. Due to a few circumstances, this review will be short and won't include everything you're used to seeing here. That's just how things worked out—and maybe that's for the best.
Liitokala 32700 LiFePO4 and a comparison with similar VariCore batteries
Not long ago, I reviewed VariCore 32700 LiFePO4 batteries. At the end, I mentioned that I’d ordered the same batteries from the same store, but under the Liitokala brand. The batteries have now arrived and been tested, and, most importantly, I was able to compare them with the previous ones. It turns out there’s a significant difference. But as usual, you’ll have to read the review to find out all about it.
Sanmim GPA40B power supply, 12 V 40 W
15-03-2020, 02:31
I left this power supply for what you might call “dessert,” partly because it stands out from the rest of the units shown earlier, and partly because I simply liked it more than the others. In any case, that’s not particularly important, and today I’ll tell you about a power supply that needs no modifications.
Compact, high-efficiency step-down converter based on the MP2225
13-03-2020, 22:30
I've already reviewed various converters, both large and powerful and really tiny ones. Today I'm going to take a closer look at a very compact version of a fairly powerful converter, with an output current of up to 4 A. Tests, oscilloscope traces, graphs—as usual :)
Used 12 V 5 A power supplies
13-03-2020, 22:24
Continuing my series of power supply reviews, today I’m looking at some used boards. They have relatively convenient output specifications, which is why I ordered them for review. As always, the review includes a detailed inspection, schematic, tests, analysis, and conclusions.
Geekcreit 36V 180W Power Supply, Part Two
7-03-2020, 11:50
When I first started writing this review, I had no idea where it would lead. In the end, I inadvertently ended up with a “two-in-one” review, even though it’s essentially about the same power supply. As always, the review will cover the inspection, schematic, tests, more tests, and conclusions.
24 V 8–10 A power supply
5-03-2020, 15:00
I got the chance to test some more power supplies, and today I’m reviewing the first one. As always, the review will include an inspection, analysis, circuit diagram, tests, and conclusions.
SH72, a compact soldering iron or TS100 for
I think many people know the compact TS100 soldering iron, which came out a few years ago. Small and powerful, but... very expensive. And not long ago, a very similar-looking but much cheaper SH72 went on sale. Of course, it’s more basic, with no display, buttons, or option to play Tetris, but it’s still perfectly functional.
Choetech 100 W Power Supply (Charger) for $34.13
27-02-2020, 13:16
The Choetech store manager sent me a deal and a coupon for a new charger (power supply) featuring GaN technology, two Type-C ports, and up to 100 W of power.
An inexpensive kit for building a T12 soldering station
27-02-2020, 02:27
I've been asked more than once about an inexpensive, decent option for a basic soldering station. If you want something reasonably good, T12-tip stations are probably the way to go: they're more convenient than the rather old 900 series. Today I have a very brief review of just such an option.
PEF-301 phase selector switch from Novatek-Electro
25-02-2020, 11:51
Not long ago, I was asked to review an interesting, if rather specialized, device: a phase selection relay. Today, I’m not only reviewing the relay itself, but also adding a little extra that I think is quite significant. But as usual, it’s best to read the full review, which includes a description, a closer look, and a teardown.

Finishing the LCR Meter + Switching to Battery Power

10 5738
21-02-2020, 20:38
The LCR meter board has been sitting around for probably two years now. Everything would be fine, but it’s not very convenient to use in its half-finished state, so I decided to finish the case and rework the power supply while I was at it.
Protection board for 3S battery packs
21-02-2020, 01:29
For one of my projects, I bought a small protection board. Its specs are modest: 3S, up to 10 A. In fact, I needed even less, so today I'm not just reviewing the board, but also making a small modification.
Fnirsi FNC88 USB Tester
15-02-2020, 19:57
The FNC88 USB tester, which has been shown many times before, has finally made its way to me. It’s made by a company with a very strange name: Fnirsi. Inspection, description, tests, conclusions—as usual.
4S 40A protection board for LiFePO4 and an example of using it in a UPS
11-02-2020, 03:42
I recently posted a review of 32700-size LiFePO4 batteries, but as you can imagine, you can't use batteries without a protection board, so I ordered one too. Since I had it on hand, I put together a short review in case it might be useful to someone.
CHOETECH Q4004 power supply (charger) with 60 W PD support
5-02-2020, 00:15
This is the second product from the Choetech store that they sent me to review and test. This time, I’ll be taking a closer look at a charger (power supply) rated for up to 60 W, with Power Delivery support and a USB Type-C output. As usual, I’ll inspect it, run some tests, take it apart, and share my conclusions.
Choetech PD 100W Cable, 1.8 m Long
31-01-2020, 01:04
Even while writing the title, it felt a little unusual to describe a cable as “100 watts.” I’m more used to cables being rated by current, voltage, or wire gauge—but by power? Anyway, read on for the review and test of this 100 W PD cable.
